Tell Ohio Speaker to Oppose "Don't Say Gay/Trans" Education Censorship Bill

The “Don’t Say Gay/Trans” bill (HB616) is a divisive and unnecessary piece of legislation. This dangerous bill prevents teachers from providing materials or teaching about LGBTQ+ issues. It also censors honest dialogue in the classroom about systemic racism, gender, and racial discrimination. Teachers will be unable to provide safe and inclusive environments for students, further stigmatizing and isolating LGBTQ+ people and people of color. This bill is a shameful effort by the Ohio State Legislature to erase and marginalize historically oppressed voices inside and outside of the classroom.

Dear Speaker Cupp,

As a proud Ohioan and a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Ohio, I am opposed to the “Don’t Say Gay/Trans” bill, HB616, by Representative Mike Loychik and Representative Jean Schmidt. This bill would effectively isolate and stigmatize LGBTQ+ peopleby banning the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity. It would also undermine existing protections for LGBTQ+ kids in schools, potentially putting them in danger.

Ths bill does nothing to address the critical needs of Ohioans, but instead furthers the political agenda of extremist legislators in Columbus, while simultaneously stifling the voices of historically disenfranchised populations. This legislation could have negative implications for the LGBTQ+ community and efforts to improve schools across Ohio.

Truth and facts matter and any efforts to censor conversations about race, gender, or sexual orientation are a threat to efforts to change hearts and minds as we fight for equality for all.
As my lawmaker, please focus on addressing the real issues facing everyday Ohioans, not stifling free speech in schools. Please oppose HB616 when it comes before you. Thank you.
