Dear Friend,

Are you in the majority?

This week the Guardian published our exclusive new polling that found 54% of people are against Boris Johnson’s plans to hand out dozens of new peerages to his friends, donors and allies in his resignation honours.

What’s more, even amongst Conservatives only 21% think the prime minister should be allowed to pack the Lords with his cronies in his final weeks in office.

Our democracy deserves better than a bloated House of Lords full to the brim with the prime minister’s handpicked allies. It looks more like a private members' club than a modern legislative chamber.

These plans cannot be allowed to continue – lifetime appointments to make our laws should not be handed out like prizes to friends and donors

It’s time we scrapped our unelected House of Lords and replaced it with a fairly elected second chamber. Our lawmakers must be elected and accountable to the people they serve not just the Prime Minister who appointed them.

Add your name: Johnson’s crony appointments must be stopped

Best wishes,
Darren Hughes,
Chief Executive,
