Why petition e-5028 matters

Animal agriculture is responsible for a staggering 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In Canada, the agriculture sector's emissions have significantly increased over the last few years, predominantly from farmed animals, making it the most emission-intensive sector next to oil and gas. The Canadian Climate Institute and Environment Commissioner have highlighted the urgent need for a meaningful climate strategy in agriculture.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Chatham House have both recommended plant-based diets as critical for addressing climate change and reducing biodiversity loss. Research shows that if Canadians reduce animal food consumption by 50% by 2030, it would cut emissions by 16%, helping Canada meet its climate targets more cost-effectively than other measures.

Getting people to eat more plant-based foods is one of the most cost-effective solutions to the climate crisis but it requires government support to scale up. This will also help phase-out factory farming – one of the biggest causes of animal suffering on the planet.

The power of your support

Petition e-5028 calls on the Government of Canada to:

• Educate Canadians on the benefits of eating less meat, dairy, and eggs, and more plant-based foods, as recommended by Canada’s Food Guide.

• Encourage federal institutions and food programs to procure more plant-based foods, setting a powerful example for others.

• Support small-scale farmers who use resilient, humane, and sustainable practices, while limiting the growth of industrial animal agriculture.

A House of Commons petition is a very important tool to get the attention of parliament and influence policy and legislation.  After our petition closes on October 8th, our sponsor, MP Laurel Collins will present the petition in the House of Commons giving the government 45 days to respond to our call to action. MPs will hear the petition read in the House of Commons and will be paying particular attention to the petitions that receive the highest number of signatures – that's why we urgently need your help!

We have so far collected over 1,000 petition signatures. The top performing House of Commons petition has more than 16,500 signatures. Can you help us get to the top?
