In Memoriam: Dr. Mary Leah DeZwart MA’91, PhD’03We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Mary Leah De Zwart, who passed away on February 21, 2026. Dr. De Zwart was a valued member of the UBC community. Together with Dr. Gale Smith, Dr. Mary Leah De Zwart developed the online Masters program in Home Economics (HEEL). Joel Heng Harste, PhD’15Since earning his PhD in 2015 from UBC, Joel has been an integral part of Simon Fraser University, where he has contributed extensively to teaching and research in applied linguistics and education. Joel’s commitment to open and accessible education was recognized in 2025 when he received the BCcampus Award for Excellence in Open Education. |

Melanie Wong, MEd’10, PhD’21Melanie Wong is a passionate educator and researcher dedicated to advancing literacy education and supporting teachers in diverse learning environments. Since earning her Master of Education in 2010 and PhD in 2021 from UBC, Melanie has been an integral part of the Faculty of Education’s Department of Language and Literacy Education.
