Hi supporter,

Do you take your preventer inhaler every day, as prescribed?

Lots of people think they only need to take their preventer inhaler when they’re unwell. But taking your preventer medicine every day - or maintenance treatment, if you have COPD -  as prescribed, is really important.

It builds up the protection in your airways. This means that when you react to a trigger like pollen or hot weather, you’re less likely to see your symptoms come on, which could lead to a potentially life-threatening asthma attack or flare-up of your lung condition.

Taking your preventer inhaler every day, as prescribed, is not only good for you, it’s also good for the environment. If you’re building up the protection in your airways over time, you’ll need fewer puffs of your reliever inhaler.

Here are some other simple things you can do to manage your lung condition well, to help you feel your best and help the environment at the same time.

Using the right inhaler technique

Using the right inhaler technique makes a big difference to how much medicine gets into your airways. Not only can it reduce your risk of an asthma attack or flare-up of your lung condition, it’s also good for the environment, because less medicine is wasted.

Changing inhalers, if right for you

The next time you speak to your GP or nurse, you might be offered a dry powder or soft mist inhaler. These lower-carbon inhalers might be the best option for you. And as an added benefit, they’re good for the environment too.
Speak to your GP, nurse or pharmacist to see if a lower-carbon inhaler would be right for you.

Returning your used inhalers

Don’t put your used inhalers in the bin – instead, take them to your local pharmacy for disposal the next time you visit. They’ll get rid of them in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.

Best wishes,

Emma + Erika
