Dear friend,

Imagine a bear experiencing the simple joys of climbing a tree, resting in the shade on a bright summer day, or taking a refreshing dip in a freshwater pond. For many of the bears at Libearty sanctuary, such experiences were once but a distant dream.

Now, they revel in a sprawling oak forest with plenty of trees to climb, bear friends to socialize with, invigorating freshwater pools to enjoy, and all the nutritious food and medical care they need. Every day at Libearty, these rescued bears can express their natural behaviours and showcase their personalities.

Each bear is unique, and we're excited to share their stories with you! Meet the bears of Libearty sanctuary and catch a glimpse of them by watching a live video feed!

You may just get to witness some playful bears splashing around. 💦

Before arriving at this haven, many of the bears were kept in tiny cages as tourist attractions, entertaining people purely for profit.

Sadly, this is a reality for many animals in Canada too. There are over one thousand wild animals being held captive in degrading conditions in Ontario alone!

Ben, the American black bear, spent more than 25-years in a tiny cage at a roadside zoo.

Alone, with no ability to engage in his natural behaviours, day after day. As the years passed, Ben's health deteriorated. He became lethargic, a state called "learned helplessness”. This happens when an animal is kept in degrading conditions for a long period of time – they essentially give up.

Ben's tragic story serves as a somber reminder of the urgent need to put an end to these cruel roadside zoos once and for all. Let’s not give up on these animals.

Canada, world renowned for its breathtaking wilderness, holds a lesser-known truth: it plays a significant role in the global multibillion-dollar wildlife trade industry.

We did the research to better understand Canada’s role in the trade in wild animals, and our findings are troubling.

Did you know that over 1.8 million wild animals were imported into Canada between 2014 and 2020? What’s even more shocking is the lack of data collection. For example, crucial pieces of information as simple as the species name was missing for 84% of imported animals.

Learn more about our research findings and join us in urging the Canadian government to take decisive action to end the global commercial wildlife trade. Forever.

How much do you know about the inner lives of fish?

Did you know that fishes exhibit remarkable cognitive skills, including spatial learning and memory? There are fish species that even know how to use tools!

Fishes (yes, that’s the correct plural form for more than one fish of different species!) are truly amazing animals with the ability to experience a range of emotions. Despite this, fishes are caught, farmed, slaughtered, and traded in the trillions every year around the world, with little regard to their welfare or their capacity for feelings.

Learn more about fish sentience and the undeniable scientific evidence behind it!

(Human) school may be out for summer, but the learning never ends!
