Across Ontario, roadside zoos are opening up for yet another season of suffering. These under-regulated facilities keep wild animals in degrading conditions, all in the name of entertainment and profit. It’s heartbreaking to see these intelligent, sentient and majestic creatures confined in such poor conditions. 

Even Marineland, a facility well-known for their ongoing animal welfare concerns, announced they will open once again for the season. They continue to mislead Canadians about their animal welfare record.

Although Ontario is often considered the “Wild West” when it comes to wild animal ownership and regulations, the rest of Canada is not immune to this issue. There are more frequent escapes, attacks and zoonotic disease outbreaks than you might think.  

Our new, interactive transparency tool shows that captive wildlife problems are a systemic issue across Canada. 

Mae Gorgae hasn’t always had the easiest life. She suffered for years in the logging and tourism industry before she arrived at the ChangChill elephant sanctuary. Her story is one of resilience and motherly love.
